    Opposition must seize victory

    The Venezuelan opposition has been criticized for not taking advantage of the major electoral victory obtained in December 2007, when voters rejected President Hugo Chávez's project to ''reform'' the constitution, an attempt to concentrate more power in the executive branch -- i.e., himself.

    Palestinian state important to Jordan

    JERUSALEM -- On Tuesday night, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Ehud Barak were secretly summoned to the palace of Jordanian King Abdullah in Amman. The king implored his guests not to launch a military operation in Gaza. Reportedly, the king was concerned that such an operation might stir emotions in the West Bank, which might as well spill over to Jordan, which consists of more than 60 percent of Palestinians.

    Obama's clarity restoring U.S. values

    `I have said repeatedly that I intend to close Guantánamo, and I will follow through on that. I have said repeatedly that America does not torture, and I'm going to make sure that we don't torture. Those are part and parcel of an effort to regain America's moral stature in the world.''

  • Credit debt déjà vu

    People, rich and poor, corporations, large and small, live on credit. That's fine so long as everyone meets his or her responsibility. Our present economic problem is the result of private and public irresponsibility. Greed has produced debt.

    Re the Nov. 13 editorial Miami River port deserves support: The assertion that the city of Miami is determined to drive out businesses to allow for condo developments along the Miami River is untrue. The Miami City Commission took an important step recently toward gaining approval for the state-mandated comprehensive plan.
